With few exceptions,13-year-old teenagers are only eligible to work in the United States if they are employed in an agricultural business that is not subject to minimum wage laws, according to the Child Labor Public Education Project. The minimum legal age to work in non-agricultural environments is 14 years of age, with other stipulations.
A 13-year-old teenager can be employed in a few industries other than agriculture, including various arts such as movies, theater and music. Additionally, young teenagers can work in a family-owned and -operated business, as long as the teenager is not subject to hazardous conditions.
In agricultural businesses, 13-year-olds must obtain written parental consent in order to be legally eligible for employment.
