A bucket, garden hose, and long screwdriver or dowel are the tools needed to drain a hot water tank. To drain the tank, a person must check the pressure-relief valve, run a drain line using the garden hose, and then flush the tank.
The person draining the tank must first turn off the water heater's power. He must ensure the pressure relief valve works by turning the lever on the cold water line, putting a bucket under it and opening it. Once opened the valve should produce either water or a hissing sound. After this, the person draining the tank should attach a garden hose to the drain spigot on the water tank and run it outside. Finally, he should open all the hot water faucets in the house and fully drain the tank. After it is drained, a long screwdriver can help to remove sediment.
